Your subscription base is the foundation of your WordPress plugin business’s recurring revenue. Every cancelled subscription represents a permanent reduction in your MRR. Every new subscription represents a compounding gain that, unlike one-time purchases, continues generating revenue without additional marketing cost. Monitoring your active subscriber base — who is subscribed, to which product, on which plan — is one of the most important ongoing activities for any developer monetizing through Freemius.
Freemius Checkout for WooCommerce provides two complementary modules for subscription and payment monitoring: the Active Subscriptions Manager (live view of your current recurring revenue base) and the Payments History module (complete chronological transaction log). Together they give you both the “right now” view (who is paying me monthly/annually today) and the historical view (every transaction ever processed through your Freemius account).
Why Subscription Monitoring Matters for Plugin Developers
Unlike software-as-a-service companies that have sophisticated customer success tools, most independent WordPress plugin developers have limited visibility into their subscriber base between renewal events. You know when someone subscribes (Freemius sends a payment notification) and when they cancel (Freemius sends a cancellation notification), but you don’t have an easy way to see your full active subscriber list in a digestible format without navigating through the Freemius developer dashboard product by product.
Having a live, always-current view of your active subscribers in WordPress enables:
- Quick headcount of subscribers per product (a proxy for product health)
- Visibility into billing cycle distribution (how many are monthly vs annual — annual subscribers have higher lifetime value and lower churn probability)
- Early detection of subscription pauses or plan downgrades as potential churn signals
- Cross-product comparison to identify which plugins have the strongest recurring revenue retention
Active-Only Filtering: Only What Matters
The Active Subscriptions module applies strict filtering to show only currently active, revenue-generating subscriptions. Records are excluded from the active view if:
- The
canceled_atfield is non-empty (subscription has been cancelled by the customer) - The
is_expiredfield is true (subscription has lapsed without renewal) - The
environmentfield is non-zero (sandbox/test subscriptions)
The filtering uses Freemius’ own filter=active API parameter in addition to the client-side checks — a defense-in-depth approach that ensures cancelled subscriptions don’t appear in the active list even if they have a remaining paid period. The result is a clean, accurate view of who is actively paying you right now.
Technical note: The API call uses /plugins/{id}/subscriptions.json?count=100&extended=true&filter=active. The extended=true parameter requests additional subscription detail beyond the basic record, including billing cycle and plan information needed for the dashboard view.
Cross-Product Aggregation
The most practical aspect of the Active Subscriptions module for multi-product developers is cross-product aggregation. The module fetches active subscriptions for every product in your Freemius developer account and merges them into a single unified list, with each subscription record labelled with its product name.
Without this aggregation, checking your active subscriber count across 5 plugins requires 5 separate Freemius dashboard visits. With the WordPress plugin, one page load gives you the complete picture: a subscription for Plugin A, a subscription for Plugin B, another for Plugin A — all in one scrollable list sorted newest-first so your most recent conversions are immediately visible.
Data Shown Per Subscription
🏷 Product Name
Which plugin or theme this subscription is for

When the subscription was first created (original purchase date)
🔄 Billing Cycle
Monthly (1) or Annual (12) billing period
💰 Amount Per Cycle
The recurring charge amount for each billing period
🔄 Renewal Amount
The amount that will be charged at next renewal (may differ from original if plan pricing changed)
👤 Subscriber ID
Freemius user ID for cross-referencing with payment and coupon data
Sorting & Newest-First Ordering
Active subscriptions are sorted newest-first by the created timestamp — the plugin uses a usort comparison on the merged subscription array from all products. This means the top of the list always shows your most recent subscriber conversions, making the Active Subscriptions view a reliable “sales pulse” indicator: if you’ve just sent a newsletter or published a blog post, you can see new subscribers appearing at the top of this list in near real-time.
Payments History: The Complete Transaction Log
Complementing the Active Subscriptions view, the Payments History module provides the complete chronological record of every transaction processed through your Freemius store — including:
- New purchases — Initial plan purchases across all products
- Subscription renewals — Annual and monthly auto-renewals
- Plan upgrades — When a subscriber upgrades from a lower to higher plan (and the payment difference)
- Refunds — Refund records with negative gross amounts
Unlike the Sales Analytics Dashboard (which aggregates metrics), the Payments History shows the raw transaction-by-transaction record — useful for reconciling specific transactions, identifying payment anomalies, or reviewing the history of a specific account period.
Store-Level Payment Data vs Product-Level
The Payments History module uses a different API endpoint than the Analytics Dashboard: it fetches from /stores/{store_id}/payments.json rather than per-product endpoints. This is the merchant-level payment view — the same perspective Freemius uses when calculating your payout balance.
The store ID is retrieved from /stores.json (using the first store in your account). If your developer ID doesn’t have a dedicated store, the plugin falls back to using the Developer ID as the store ID — ensuring the payments history works regardless of how your Freemius account structure is configured.
Using Active Subscriptions to Monitor Churn Signals
While the Active Subscriptions module doesn’t directly show cancellation events (cancelled subscriptions are filtered out), you can infer churn rate by comparing subscriber counts between dashboard visits over time. More practically:
- A declining subscription count between weekly check-ins indicates churn exceeding new subscriber acquisition — a business growth problem requiring immediate attention
- A rising subscription count confirms your marketing and product work is producing net positive growth
- A stable subscription count may indicate churn and acquisition are in balance — the business is maintaining rather than growing
For deeper churn analysis, the Freemius native dashboard’s cancellation reports provide more detail. The WordPress plugin’s Active Subscriptions view is optimized for the “current state” snapshot rather than churn analytics — a deliberate design choice that keeps the interface fast and focused.
Vs. Lemon Squeezy & Paddle Subscription Views
Both Lemon Squeezy and Paddle provide subscription management views in their own dashboards. Neither provides a WordPress admin plugin that surfaces this data inside WordPress. For developers who want to stay inside their WordPress workflow, this WordPress-native subscription view has no equivalent in either alternative platform’s toolset.
Additionally, the cross-product aggregation in this plugin — showing subscriptions across multiple products in one unified view — is something that both Lemon Squeezy and Paddle display per-store but not across stores in a single interface. For developers with multiple products across multiple stores, the aggregation model here is superior for a high-level portfolio view.
FAQ
Can I see cancelled subscriptions?
Not in the Active Subscriptions module — that view is intentionally filtered to active-only. Cancelled subscriptions appear in the Payments History as historical transaction records, but there is no dedicated cancelled subscription view in v1.1.0. The Freemius native dashboard provides cancellation reports for churn analysis.
How many subscriptions are shown?
The API call fetches up to 100 active subscriptions per product (count=100). For products with more than 100 active subscribers, the most recent 100 are displayed. Pagination support for larger subscriber bases is a planned enhancement.
Can I cancel or modify a subscription from the WordPress plugin?
No. The current v1.1.0 is read-only for subscriptions — it displays subscription data but does not provide cancellation, pause, or plan change operations. These actions remain in the Freemius developer dashboard. Write operations for subscriptions may be added in a future version.
